@MaxBarraclough: Note that the semantics might have changed, since the 4.0 driver now knows retries, so explicitly checking for some connection to some server in the cluster seems pointless. Try the operation, have the driver handle retries and only worry about cases where even that fails. Ping seems to low-level a tool when talking to a cluster.

Thank you so much!! Setting automountServiceAccountToken immediately fixed the problem. I was staring right at it but I just didn't see what was going on ;) Care to post this as an answer? The fact that it just deployed without even complaining certainly made this harder to pinpoint, but I guess that's a problem of the traefik image?
