I am a Florida practicing Thien Buddhist and traditional Japanese karateka. I am part of Thich Nhat Hanh's Wake Up Sangha. www.wkup.org
I practice Buddhism as an offering of generosity to the world. I want a peaceful world, and I believe that starts with being a peaceful person. That being said, meditation is a great place for me to train my mind and really look deeply and cultivate the mind I wish to have. I want to be a benefit to others, and I see no greater way then to have a mind of bodhichitta.
Initially, I just wanted to not suffer. I wanted to not be sad, lonely, and angry. I wanted to have some control on who I am and how I see myself. I wanted to be happy. Now, four years later, I can still say that I want those same things. But I quickly realized that I can't do it alone. I am seeking a community of support that can help me nourish and cultivate peace and happiness. I am seeking peace in myself, and peace in the world. I know these go together and I believe that it is a real possibility. I want people to never feel like happiness is outside of their reach. I want to be free. I have an idea of the way I want to live my life, yet I don't strive to reach that ideal. It confuses me that I can say to myself, "I want to live this way" and yet actually live in such a different way. I would like the discipline and self control to direct my body speech and mind in the most skillful means. And in that discipline become a stable pillar of "me-ness" exemplifying my own inspirations, aspirations, and goals.
