Nornalup, Western Australia, Australia

My programming experience began circa 1978 on a Digital DECsystem-10, passes through the personal computer revolution Apple ][ and Commodore 64, minicomputers like the VAX/VMS, before landing on the Intel i386 and its successors running MS-DOS, Windows and finally GNU/Linux.

During this time I have completed a Bachelor of Science with majors in Computer Science and Mathematics, a Bachelor of Arts with majors in History and Political Science, and a Doctorate in Political Science - see my thesis Overseeing and overlooking: Australian engagement with the Pacific islands 1988-2007.

Most recently, I have focused on combining my software, data science and social science skills, working toward a fully-fledged Free and Open Source system for Qualitative Data Analysis while working as a research consultant.

If there is one thing I have learned over the course of 40 years in the software business it is that, for all the evolution in technology and exponential increase in processing power, most problems in software engineering have changed little. It’s not for nothing that the most important and influential texts in the field were created by early giants like Donald Knuth and Edsger Dijkstra
