Quitters can't be choosers, won't be leaders; they may just fade out of history. One can't be proud of ruining the World's vivre ensemble efforts, promoting it and making policy choices with far ranging implications out of fear. Understandably, some are curious about the status of refugees worldwide, so let me indulge you. On Our planet, there are 65 million people who are displaced [Westerners host only 20% of these; top hosts countries are Turkey, Pakistan, Lebanon and Iran, and such countries have been doing that for decades - thank you], 20 million refugees and 10 million stateless people (UNHCR Statistics). And every.single.one of them refugees must be catered to in terms of their most basic rights. Because, "We, the Peoples of the United nations, are determined: to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind; and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small." (part of the UN Charter preamble). So there was WWII. There is now, and human dignity is no one trick pony.
Furthermore, many rules of international humanitarian law are part of a body of customary international law, the latter being automatically binding on any state (for instance the Fourth Geneva Convention). In so many words, any one state, body politic or pseudo-savior promoting the undermining of refugee status or associating refugees with enemy combatants to score political points is at least indirectly taking a stance against some such rules which their country is bound to unconditionally, and is undermining the U.N. Charter. And will be held accountable, as history will tell of those who tried to revise it, who schemed against refugees or made scapegoats out of them, while exiting their commitment to mankind's dignity and its security in order to save/make a buck. It is this Westerners' control of installed Middle-East leaders who are disconnected from their people as well as war and climate changes which have been responsible for what's been happening; so we must come to terms with that and do better.
We should be free from fascism and always scrutinize the actions of those who constantly, either willingly or unknowingly, undermine our international and national institutions, the role of the state in democracy and as provider of services for those in need, and the rule of law, and try to justify the unconscionable. We should fight back and hold true to being human and human beings, for that is the true meaning of greatness. Update profile info
