comment How to iterate a table rows with JQuery and access some cell values?
@qed stores the current contextual value of "this" into a variable called $this. If you were to nest another iterative call after the quantity assignment, calling "$(this)" would no longer be the same result. I believe Brian is just using standard best practice to avoid this confusion, but he could have just as easily named it "curRow", etc.

comment how to avoid hardcoding environment urls for salesforce api for our call ins
For this line: client = new ForceTools.SforceService.SoapClient("Soap", lr.serverUrl); the server url is always instanced, is there a generic one available? I.e. https://login.salesforce.com/services/Soap/c/36.0/etc similar to the authz URL?

thank you! I do think I should be using the transient property from what you've explained so far. I updated my question with my use of it, but I'm having an issue locating any Salesforce documentation on what's allowed for the rerender property. Could you shed some light there?

Can you explain your use of transient here and why it's necessary? Also is there another attribute I need to set, possibly rerender? The value isn't updating on MyController.

@AdrianLarson I see an answer there similar to what sfdcfox posted here, but I wouldn't call it a duplicate. He's using the page parameters and rerender, what I'm asking and what was answered here seems far simpler. Either way, thanks to both of you.

@AdrianLarson I found that post useful, but did not find the solution there appealing. I don't want to have to change all of my action functions and controller methods to remote actions when this happens. sfdcfox's solution is much more flexible and doesn't require a complete restructuring.

Is there any way to have multiple options under "My Sidebar Pages", which in turn do different things when clicked based on the contents of your VF page? Or do I have to create a separate VF page for each link?

comment Give internal users access to the customer portal by default?
Yes, but there is a setting for enabling all internal users as community users so that isn't really a problem, only the portal user access doesn't allow the same property.
