comment Difference between script manager and toolkit script manager
"First of all: Pages using controls from AJAX Control Tookit .NET 3.5 must use the ToolkitScriptManager, rather than the ASP.NET ScriptManager." We've been using the AjaxControlToolkit controls for a number of years and still use ScriptManager. The application still works without ToolkitScriptManager so your statement isn't entirely true.

Many thanks again, that was really well explained. Your final query certainly looks a lot neater when the tables are normalized.

Many thanks for your comprehensive answer, you obviously put some time and effort into it and I'm really grateful for that. If I were to take on-board your suggestion to normalize reftblDSAColumnLabels & tblDSAData how would that impact the dynamic query? Would the 'select @cols...' statement still be required to provide the column names from reftblDSAColumnLabels which can then be fed into the main SELECT statement?

The query will be embedded in a Stored Proc with the PersonCategoryId passed in as a parameter. I would always want to retrieve PersonCategoryId, SampleDate and then all the Antigen columns up to Antigen12Label & Antigen12Value. If it is possible to restrict the Antigen columns returned to only those where Antigen(n)Label is not null that would be even better as there will never be data in the Antigen(n)Value column if the corresponding Label column is null

comment Ordering numeric like strings in T-SQL
@Kaf - Just when I thought I had it all sussed I've found an allele in the table with 3 ':' separators: - 01:01:02:01 The current algorithm has this value place above 01:01 (Note, there is no 01:01:02 in the table)

Sorry JohnD but what do you mean by upvote? I'm assuming it doesn't mean to mark an answer as correct.

Yes Praveen, the column has hundreds of values. I just chose a representative sample to explain the problem
