How can I invest in gold without taking physical possession? @MrChrister - Can you name an investment that isn't speculative? No investment is guaranteed to give the investor a return. Life is one long series of speculative decisions made by individuals. |

Protecting savings from exceptional taxes Using the logic that government provides services so one should not complain about their money being stolen can justify the government stealing all one's money since the money is being used to provide services. Communism is acceptable using that logic. By the way, I'd be absolutely thrilled if roads, power, and water was government's only concern. But alas, killing innocent people usually make up the lion's share of most government activity. |

Protecting savings from exceptional taxes What do you call people who force people to hand over their property against their will? I call them criminals. |

Protecting savings from exceptional taxes @littleadv: Why the hostility? He asked how to protect his savings from being stolen by government. My answer addresses that. Your answer instructs him to try to talk nice to the criminals. Is that really your answer? |

How to invest in gold at market value, i.e. without paying a markup? With the recent events in Cyprus it takes some real chutzpah to say gold is less attractive than deposits in a bank. |

How to invest in gold at market value, i.e. without paying a markup? I understand that there are times when the S&P performs better than gold. I would also never suggest that someone invest all of their money in gold. But I would never discard an entire asset class and call it a religion without trying to understand what could cause it to go up or down in value. |

How to invest in gold at market value, i.e. without paying a markup? I suggest looking at hyperinflation and decide whether long term paper money actually makes sense for you as an investor. It's sold with the same enthusiasm as snake oil was in the 1800's, and the suggestion that it's a storehouse of value seems non-nonsensical to me. Especially after examining paper money's notorious history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperinflation |
