I started my working life as a commercial photographer and photojournalist. The USAF trained me to be a software engineer in 1964. In civilian life I stuck with high tech advancing to CTO & VP Engineering in Silicon Valley. In retirement I've worked as an Internet Coach, web site designer developer and writer. I've been an Ubuntu user since 6.04.

comment Can't bind Super + w in xbindkeys, all other combos work fine
It appears that there are some key combinations that the system already uses that will only perform their system function even if the custom shortcuts allowed you to assign that code combination to a different function. Another example is Ctrl-Alt-C which is assigned to the calculator. I tried to assign that key combo to execute a different calculator and it wouldn't work.

comment Hard drive overheats when laptop running on AC power
In an effort to save battery power your system is probably spinning down the disk when not in use for some period of time. When on AC it may be keeping it spun up for maximum performance -- generating higher temp. I believe but can't confirm that Linux has configuration parameters for this. The default power preferences in 12.04 don't offer control of this to the user. I've seen but can't recall the source, power managers with more detailed control. That is where I'd look for a solution.

comment Unity home icon replaced with grey file cabinet
Sorry for using an example with icons not included in the default release. You can certainly use Humanity icons if you choose. FYI Faenza are available by running the following two lines in a terminal window: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install faenza-icon-theme
