I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is not about performing or practising music. If there were a HiFi SO, then it would be a good fit. Perhaps there should be.

comment Strange behavior from a while loop
Possibly by adding a tiny pause while the IO happens, during which the non-volatile fields get propagated.

I don't know the reason for what you're seeing, but what you have there is a "busy wait" that will chew CPU until the counts reach zero. Read up on thread synchronisation, and make it wait() for the other thread(s).

Thanks, this does seem to be the case. Unfortunately in some commercial situations like mine, "just bad luck if any client relied on it" doesn't cut it. Customers order of preference is "working with secure cipher" > "working with weak cipher" > "not working at all" -- and their contracts reflect that. And "availability" is part of "security".

Just a tip @BrianBjurstrom - now, as a complete beginner, is the time to learn to us a debugger. It will save you hours. If you're not already using an IDE like Eclipse, do. The debugger is only a click away.

comment How can I quickly quick multiple variables within a loop?
The quote doesn't really apply here. The quote is telling you that you can't have a variable called for, int, class etc. (keywords), true or false (boolean literals) or null (the null literal). i is none of these. The problem is trying to have two variables with the same identifier.

comment Home recording: Preamp or Dynamic Mic?
Many condenser mics can use a battery, when phantom power isn't available. You still need XLR, but that's another matter.

MDC.remove() is necessary to avoid leaking memory. Of course if your healthchecks are infrequent, this doesn't matter much; but each time you do MDC.put() you consume some memory, and I don't think it's reclaimed automatically.
