comment Can I say "Being walking down the street, I met my old friend."?
"Being surprised at the news" could be acceptable; "Walking down the street" is such a widely used idiom that "Being walking down the street" sounds wrong.

comment Does salt vaporise?
Note that pure NaCl does melt and evaporate, though at much higher temperatures (801ºC MP / 1413ºC BP)

comment NSDictionary - Cannot Invoke "init"
You really should check that the image is not nil and handle that error if it's not.

comment How can we allow moderators to delegate some chat-room maintenance?
Doesn't really matter for mod rooms, as everyone there can talk while it's frozen and could unfreeze it anyway.

comment Is a car loan bad debt?
I agree. My wife and I financed our car only because we got a 0.9% rate (which they only gave us because we threatened to pay cash). It's a cheap way to add positively to your credit history, in addition to the other points you list.

Another benefit of a low-interest loan is to boost credit history. If you pay an extra $500 in interest for a car loan, but it enables you to get a mortgage when you wouldn't have had the history without it, or especially if it raises your credit enough to save you a fraction of a point on a mortgage, it can pay for itself many times over.

comment Shell script to copy and prepend folder name to files from multiple subdirectories
Don't store the glob results in scalar variables, that removes the white space safety. Just use them directly - for folder in /parent/*

Well, I'll take another look at field sieves then, see if I can find an explanation that helps me at least understand enough to implement it in C.

And I know you were going for something faster, but, well, it's an answer and at least establishes a baseline for faster algorithms to aim for. I was looking at wheel factorization last night, so I'll see about upgrading soon.

comment Factoring a 64-bit integer
@orlp I'll need the division result anyway unless the condition is false, so that'd be 3 extra ops per iteration to save 7 on the last. I'll check out the links when I have a chance.

Also, you'll note that 1 GHz is a billion cycles per second, so at full processor speed (2-3GHz) the 10B cycles measured so far would have completed in more like 3-5 seconds instead of 16 hours.

@edc65 Quite slow. I actually wrote a c version first to go off of, it did the largest one in under 30 seconds, the largest completed by golf so far in 7.5.
