I first encountered source code before my teen years on a TRS-80 Model I with a Level II Basic ROM but a Games Pack (Tic-Tac-Toe, Checkers, Chess, Backgammon) that was written in Level I Basic. The machine came with a filter that was supposed to read in Level I source and emit a Level II program, but the filter was broken, and so I had to fix the games before I could play them. From that moment on, the machine itself became the the best game available.
My passion for computer science turned towards the theoretical in college, and back towards practical when I entered the workforce — a transition I made when the Java programming language was first introduced.
I had the good fortune of being able to commit the sin of inventing an in-house web-application programming language in XML syntax — which was a great source of experience at the expense of the unfortunate souls who programmed in it. Today I spend my days working to replace that system with a more modern implementation using GWT as the basis of the view layer.
I have looked longingly at NeXT systems and their programming environment from their beginning, but have only recently started seriously practicing Objective-C now that the environment has shrunk into my pocket and onto my tablet.
I would like to find some time to dabble in Haskell so that I can experience the thrill of completely changing the way that I think about programming once again.
