comment Querying and modifying TEXINPUTS from inside a latex file?
Does this help you: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/15960/graphicspath-and-include Note that graphicspath exists for exactly this reason with images, the include statement is the "tricky" part.

comment Python - Compare values in lists (not 1:1 match)
if line not in a/b compares the key by the entire entry of the list, to retain the form you have you should use two for loops to check for in element string

Yes, I transfer the data-pointer to get the location of the stored data, so it is basically a pointer address in the character intrinsic.

What about now? I think explaining a larger part of the API is meaningless? No?

comment Group style key does not work in pgfplotsset
Yes, this is a bug, but rather it is a peculiar feature of the family key which is used to install group styles before. I am sadly not proficient enough in the family key of pgf to decipher the bugfix. Basically the family filter should expand all styles, then subsequently fetch the group style. Yet, currently you have to put group style in the groupplot env to get to work directly. Instead do: .../.style={...,/pgfplots/group/.cd,!allgroupstyles!}. I agree, it isn't beautiful, but it will work.

comment Am I properly inserting legends in groupplots? Labels "multiply defined"
There are a bunch of corner cases to take into account. Again I would advice you to move it down to the respective ≠xtgroupplot\nextgroupplot or do, A.sty≤={≤≥ndstuff...}A/.style={legend stuff...} and put AA in the ≠xtgroupplot\nextgroupplot. In that way it seems common. (I know, just an idea if you want the stuff collected).

However, your example is far from a MWE... So I will not try to decipher that ;)

To be frank, I am quite surprised you do not have 3 legend boxes. Furthermore I just do not get how you get the legend box below the plots with legend style={at={(0.98,0.825)}}. Nevertheless it might not always make sense in grouped plots to have a common legend. It can be used for that, but it is general to allow different legends in each \nextgroupplot. So I would not say that common legends should be a general feature of the grouped plots. I always encourage users to supply legends in the plot they wish the legend box shown, this is a simple reflection of the abstraction allowed.
