comment DataObject + TranslatableDataObject + ModelAdmin
I checked that out on a fresh setup and it did not work with bot of my classes. The translation appears as long as there is no relation involved between the objects (just left the $db properties in both classes, devbuild/flushed and the Translation tab appeared). However, it still did not fully work in that the Create button went dead - it did not create translation on click.

@wmk Sure. I updated the question with the code you asked (only renamed FacilityType to FacilityCategory).

Thanks @wmk, but commenting out the Translatable invocations to the DataObjects did not help. Was it just a side note or you think it should definitely get it work?

comment ModelAdmin screen for DataObject not opening
As per two separate ModelAdmins - this was my first intuitive choice to keep the admin stuff in the same file along with the corresponding DataObject class, but if I tell me that such an approach, for instance, affects performance, I will surely go your way.

@jpmcc Bull's eye! That was it. A very good lesson. Please copy your comment as an answer and you'll get it accepted.

comment Failing at constructing an instance of kendo.data.DataSource
That; s an intrinsic feature of extending a Kendo widget. When you provide a name 'MyWidget' the instance is available from DOM as 'kendoMyWidget'. The thing I don't understand is why the underlying dataSource columns are respected, while data is not.

comment Failing at constructing an instance of kendo.data.DataSource
My point was actually not the .view() method. The same happens when I use .data() method. I do not understand why - when I inspect my custom instance through $('#mygrid').data('kendoMyGrid').dataSource - I can see the columns as passed to the instance, but can see no data...
