Try this - atheros wireless ar9285 driver , Please change the driver name from ath9k to ath9k_htc in above steps. (If those steps doesn't work, use sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k_htc.conf and reboot to revert the changes)

comment Should I remove unused desktop?
Just FYI, removing DE isn't easy. While installing DE uses meta package, but removing that meta package doesn't remove all the components. Manual removal can causes damage. So if you are not facing any critical issue, let it be as it is.

comment ubuntu overheating due to both graphics cards
If you have installed bumblebee the power save should work automatically. After boot up, use dmesg to see the log. It should say something like disabling discrete card

Probably you need to install the driver via addtional driver tab, that might add some utility.

Press Alt+ctrl+f1, login. Run sudo apt-get purge nvidia*. Reboot using sudo reboot. Let us know if this fixed the issue. Source: 2 days of banging head with my laptop :(, After removing bumblebee I was in same state.

comment I'm on version 10.10 and cant seem to up upgrade to a newer version?
Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! New questions about end-of-life Ubuntu releases are considered off-topic as per the [help/on-topic]. These old releases are unsupported and their use is not recommended. They don't even get updates for newly discovered security vulnerabilities, which makes using them risky. If you install or upgrade to a supported release and this question still applies, please flag and/or comment to request it be reopened.

Open up your computer at 2.30 AM IST ;-) .. jokes apart. You can upgrade to beta now. There won't be much changes on last day.
