This answer is good, but I feel your wording misrepresents the real performance characteristics: "even with this very small data set, the view method is substantially faster". In reality, the negation is O(n) and the argsort is O(n log n). This means the timing discrepancy will diminish for larger data sets - the O(n log n) term dominates, however your suggestion is an optimisation of the O(n) part. So the complexity remains the same, and it's for this small data set in particular that we see any significant differences.
