If you don't have any sub-directories that you have to exclude, you could just skip checking for the type all together. But if you do, then I think the most efficient way would be to use -Filter; dir *.* | ... The -Filter parameter is passed to the PSProvider so non-matches are never passed to the PowerShell engine in the first place.

How do you want to process the result? Do you want to run it as a background task and store the result in a log file, or do you want to run it in a shell window until you cancel it manually?
