@Walter: I mean that you can either update existing records in the DB with the update statement. Or you can insert new records with the insert statement. But you are mixing the syntax. Look up the syntax in the doc

OR 'aple' is a condition for itself and returns false. Just like OR 'appl' So your where simplifies to WHERE B.type = 1 and B.notes LIKE 'apple'

That does not make sense. If you don't need the subquery, use the numbers. Of course it is faster than select from another table.
