comment Make this background transparent, then visable then STAY visable
The only states that I can think of in CSS are the pseudoclasses :visited etc. on links, :target on anything with an id, but requires clicking, and I think there's :invalid now for form fields? But none of these suggests itself to your application.

comment account login slow in Centos
Might be something slow in your .bashrc? Or your home directory being mounted on demand from a remote server. (Is opening a second session also slow?)

This is really two separate and unrelated issues, isn't it, i.e. a) sidebar and customization and b) changing images?

comment Getting the "Duchess" font to work
@Steve: I can confirm that just opening the font in FontForge and then hitting File, Generate Font, ignoring the error that crops up, appears to fix the font. The resulting file is smaller than the original though, so something else seems to be happening there. Unfortunately, I don't think giving you the modified file would be covered by the academic exemptions in copyright law that I need to claim to modify the font in the first place. But as I said, it's three clicks, and Fontforge is precompiled for Windows and Mac, so I hope it's not too much hassle for you.
