comment How do I remotely edit files via ssh?
Unsurprisingly, the installation step will fail on distributions that are not deb-based and hence don't have apt-get. (In which case, yum or zypper might be present.) They also require root on the local machine, whcih may or may not be available. (This is not to say it's a bad solution, but it comes with a big prerequisite.)

Point well taken re multi-file arguments. However, I am not asking for clarifications or improvements to the OP's question, so this is rightfully not a comment. (For a lower-rep OP, I would possibly have gone back to provide more detail.)

comment How did 'up to' evolve to mean 'regardless of', in maths?
I'd say it's "equal [for the purpose at hand, with a difference] up to X [which is irrelevant in context]", but I'm no authoritative source. So you're right, it is an upper bound, an upper bound on the difference.

In this case (i.e. assuming number of files is large, number of users is small), gawk '1{u[$0]=1;} END{ for (x in u){print x;}}' might be better than sort -u since it doesn't store one line per file.
