I've been programming since my mother bought me a Tandy 1000 back in the day; my first major project was an ill-conceived attempt to recreate the Genesis "Jurassic Park" game in GW-BASIC. (That one didn't go so well. Graphics processing was not GW-BASIC's strong suit.) Nowadays, I mostly work on web applications. I think jQuery is pretty much the best thing ever. I'm almost completely self-taught and I can pretty much guarantee I'm doing just about everything the Wrong Way. But I mostly enjoy it - or, at least, I get filled with rage a lot less than I used to.
