comment Colour maths: effect of transparent black overlay on lightness
You have provided a functional alternative to a translucent black overlay, however my question, "How can a translucent black overlay be converted to an equivalent reduction in lightness", is yet to be answered.

That definitely does it! I'm still interested to see if there's a relationship between mixing with black/white and darken/lighten, so I'll leave it open for now.

comment Using Rails Migration on different database than standard "production" or "development"
We did something similar, but with a ConnectionMigration superclass with a #with_connection(connection) method, so we could use the functionality in different migrations with different connections without duplication. Also, the override for #connection is not needed (see api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/…).

comment Check to see if WebSocket is hixie client-side?
We are using a similar test, and have realised recently that some versions of Safari (certainly 5.0.1) have the CLOSED property on WebSocket.prototype, not WebSocket. Therefore our test is more like if(window.WebSocket && (WebSocket.CLOSED == 2 || WebSocket.prototype.CLOSED == 2).

On the other hand, slice is far more appropriate for the presented use case.

comment How do I configure the Airbrake gem to log all Rails exceptions in both development and production environments?
Another thing is that, for the error to show in airbrake, it must come from the subdomain you have configured in your airbrake account settings (e.g., probably not localhost). You can use /etc/hosts to give yourself a suitable domain (e.g. dev.example.com). This is needed in addition to the other two things.

comment Parameterize set-returning function with column in the same query
As a fairly esoteric addendum, this also means you can do select table from table to get a single column result containing full table rows.
