Rabbonim on the site This is actually a very interesting question / issue. Since the rep # is one method of determining what a person's realiability is or "reputation" what is its relationship with outside means of measuring qualification, e.g. semicha, a doctorate, etc? |

Why is Avraham's monotheism not mentioned in the torah? @DoubleAA "Ur can mean fire" -- OK, fine, perhaps that's where the midrash comes from. But that doesn't infer any of Abraham's beliefs directly; it is still based on extratextual evidence. Where is the direct link? The OP is interested in where Abraham's theological beliefs are reflected in the p'shat, not in a deeper interpretation. |

Why is Avraham's monotheism not mentioned in the torah? "it does allude that he was thrown into a furnace at Ur Kasdim" -- Where, exactly? The verses that you quoted don't say anything about a furnace. Much of what we know about Abraham is from the midrash or Talmud, not from the Bible itself. |

First steps for someone considering conversion @MonicaCellio No, I think it's part of the process. Deciding that you want to be Jewish is a learning process. Part of that should be "finding a teacher" (which Pirke Avot says that you should do) who you look up to and want to learn from. This does not preclude Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Humanistic, etc. teachers. |

First steps for someone considering conversion All I'm saying is that people have a choice. Conversion is a choice. If one does not want to go through an Orthodox conversion, that's their choice. They still need to work with a rabbi, because one cannot simply decide that they are Jewish. But they have a choice of what kind of Jew they want to be. |

First steps for someone considering conversion "in the context of becoming a member of a nation, acceptance by that nation is of paramount importance" (@IsaacMoses) -- Actually it is the other way around. As Ernst Renan argues in "What is a Nation?" (1882) the nation is a "daily plebiscite" so it is up to the individuals to choose to be a part of the nation rather than the other way around. |

When did the switch to matrilineal descent occur? My 2 cents, as someone deeply interested in Jewish history and Jewish life. By defining his site as being about "orthodox Halakha" you are excluding many people who are very knowledgable and passionate about the subject but have different views. This is very dangerous and will only help to make this site more or less marginal, representative of only a sub segment of the discourse surrounding Jewish issues. |
