comment How to mock standard library functions in D
Sergei you're right: I didn't think it through and was going to complicate my life. Adam please write it as an answer so i can accept it.

comment How to mock standard library functions in D
thanks for the idea, but if I go down this road I'd prefer to wrap the used std functions in some object and use a factory to decide whether to instantiate the real object or the mocks. I'm still looking for a more 'surgical' solution :)

So basically I need a second uC doing the work on the slave side, am I correct? Power consumption is not really an issue here.

comment How to declare a pointer to a template function in D lang?
yes I understand the reason of the error. I was just wondering if, given the fact that all the assignments are known, the compiler could not track down each assignment, verify the return type, and complain if it's not consistent. Clearly it does not. Thanks a lot for the explanation, though :)

comment How to declare a pointer to a template function in D lang?
It could, but it doesn't: my expectation would be that if the compiler finds two mismatching functions it chokes (a bit like in this case: pastebin.com/8Tf5TdPQ) But maybe I'm just missing something: I'm super new to the language.

It does solve the problem :-), albeit I was expecting that the compiler would have been able to deduce the return type, both the functions being present and returning an array of string.

comment generating branch coverage data for lcov
as Abhay Joshi said below: remember to add the --rc line on every single lcov invocation, otherwise it will drop the branch stats. Also, genhtml option is --rc genhtml_branch_coverage=1
