Yes, I'm talking about a customized user database. Currently the most promising solution is to work with views and a custom PasswordEncoder and / or to rewrite the user services and configure these custom services in config.xml.

comment basic question about mapnik
Mapnik is known for sophisticated cartographic rendering rather than for speed. For dynamic content Mapserver is probably faster. But for static content (like satellite imagery) you can combine Mapnik with TileCache (tilecache.org) or MapProxy (mapproxy.org) which caches static tiles.
