I meant to ask: does it change while the app is connected to it? Android already retrieves it for you and puts it in the Intent, your code retrieves it a second time.

One more thing: does the NDEF message on the tag change? If it is constant, you can just retrieve it from the intent (see here), or use Ndef.getCachedNdefMessage().

My main point is that you cannot prevent the system from delivering intents to your app as is happening now. So your app should be able to deal with it in a manner that makes sense somehow and prevent undesirable outcomes.

Keep in mind that if you want to support a mixed system of (existing) DESFire cards and (new) HCE apps, this can be tricky, because of the differences between the 2. Particularly the need to send an ISO Select to activate an Android HCE app will likely clash with the use of DESFire cards.
