In addition to developing software tools for brain imaging research such as Mindboggle, I head the SIMPL(E) group for seeking and interpreting meaningful patterns and latent explanations in data at Sage Bionetworks. To further open science initiatives, I also help to coordinate international challenges. In a current challenge, contestants are trying to predict behavioral measures from MRI scans of Alzheimer's patients.

Side projects include comprehensive photodocumentation of the Ellora cave temples of India, taxonomic classification of information visualization, and time-lapse photography.

In the past I have conducted research in 3-D display holography from a high school basement lab to MIT's Media Lab, tissue optics at Caltech, automated anatomical brain labeling at Cornell, and information visualization at the Parsons Institute for Information Mapping.
