Probably for debugging perposes? If that is the case, why don't you just use GDB?

comment Cross Compiling GCC generating invalid assembly
The code gcc compiled is 100% c, so I guess it is a compiler bug. And yes, it does the same thing with a older version. I'm using the latest (gcc 4.7.1 if I'm not mistaken. I could post the code if you want?
