agreed.. that certainly is one way.. just as multiple regex are.. but in my opinion, quite a bit messy.. the ideal situation in my case would be a single regex that captures all the parameters regardless of the order they appear in.. however i think that this may be wishful thinking and probably no regex exists that can do this.. in which case, your answer turns out to be the next best option.. and hence correct.. :)

The only solutions I have are: 1. Define multiple regex permutations and test for each of them (request > object and object > request). 2. Define single regex and ensure the query string contains parameters in a fixed order only.

Thanks for the response jakerella. However the core argument still remains unaddressed. What SINGLE regex can possibly match AND capture the request and object variable values in both these urls. /adminNPS?request=abc&object=xyz and /adminNPS?object=xyz&request=abc.

im sorry but im unable to get it to work, would you be kind enough to lay out the complete query? i need to update the LOGS table in batches of X rows while joining it with other tables.. heres my query right now.. UPDATE LOGS l LEFT JOIN users u ON u.id = l.user_id SET l.username = u.username, l.user_role = u.user_role WHERE l.username IS NULL

it works yes.. however if i wish to limit and order based on the LOGS table, the LOGS table becomes a read-only view.. and updating fails..

a follow up question.. i noticed that the sql ORDER BY and LIMIT clauses dont work with this type of query (update + join).. it works with a standard or joined SELECT query.. how can i impose a LIMIT with this query?

Thank you so much. It's so simple that it's beautiful. :)
