comment How can a character manipulate animals while magically speaking with them?
I have to disagree that sharing food with an animal or letting it smell you to let you befriend it is an example of "negotiating a conflict by using proper etiquette and manners". I'm guessing the Int requirement is there because creatures of animal intelligence have no "etiquette or manners" which can be applied diplomatically, not because you cannot be friendly to them. In short: Don't let the rules over-*rule* (sorry...) your game! :-)

Don't forget you always have the option to roleplay (instead of "rollplay"), doubly so for social encounters. The game's rules are hardly adequate enough to have a check for every action you might want to undertake, so if you feel something should work (e.g., because you do it yourself in real life), just describe it and/or act it out.

comment How much greed is too much for a Chaotic Neutral character?
Keep in mind that new players may want to "test the waters", so to say. Anyway, here's a related question with a good answer: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/18937/… Also this one might be helpful, but read it toned down a bit, e.g., replace "killing" with "stealing": rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/8002/…

Wouldn't dropping a 3.5-CR1/2 monster by 1 CR put it at exactly PF-CR1/2?

comment What are the reasons for limiting number of players in Dogs in the Vineyard?
Fiasco has a 3 to 5 player limit and it suggests to play two (or more) games simultaneously when you have 6+ players. The same might work for DitV provided you can recruit another GM.
