Fixed! A combination of trivial errors. I finally resorted to looking at the PHP and Magento error logs (should have done that first). PHP Parse Error, Unexpected T_VARIABLE = syntax error in line 34 -- no ; after $variable definition. Then I had forgotten to change the path to ./shflags to an absolute path. Working like a charm now!
